WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO HARTFORD, 3-0

UMBC fell to 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in the America East Conference as they were shut out by Hartford (1-3, 1-0 America East) by a score of 3-0 to open league play, this afternoon, at the UMBC Soccer Stadium.

The game remained scoreless until the 74th minute when Hawk senior Jeanette Akerlund (Stockholm, Sweden/Eriksdalsskolan), evaded all defenders to notch a goal ten yards from the left corner, past UMBC keeper Robin Babaris (Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat). Hartford added insurance goals with their next two shots as both freshman Christina Saropolous (Somerville, Mass./Austin Prep.) and sophomore Erin Mucha (Granby, Conn./Granby) found the back of the net within the final 73 seconds. Saropolous one-timed it from the left side while Babaris was outside the box, while Mucha shot from the top right corner to score Hartford's third goal of the game.

For the game, UMBC outshot Hartford, 13-8. Babaris made two saves for the Retrievers, while senior Heather Hinton (Neshanic Station, N.J./Hillsborough/Seton Hall) stopped six at the Hawk net.
