Baltimore, Md. - The 2003 Women's Basketball Retriever Tip-Off Tournament came to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon with the Delaware State Hornets (2-0) claiming the tournament title with a 74-68 win over Pennsylvania (1-1). In the consolation game, Iona (1-1) defeated UMBC (0-2) 64-43. Following the championship game awards were handed out to the all-tournament team. Earning the accolades was Jewel Clark (Penn), Joey Rhoads (Penn), Michelle Fahy (Iona), Mandy Clark (Del. State) and Andrea Jones (Del. State). Jones was also named tournament MVP.
The Hornets after leading 32-28 at the end of the first half extended their lead to 12 with 10 minutes to play in regulation and looked like they were going to cruise thru the second half until a 17-3 run by Penn put the Quakers ahead with by two, 59-57, with four minutes to play.
The Hornets rebounded and took their lead back with a basket by Terrelle Waller at 2:27, taking a 61-60 lead. Down the stretch Waller and Jones made their free throws as Hornets took the six-point victory. Jones scored 16 points to lead the Hornets while Mandy Clark added 15. Leading the way for Penn was Jewel Clark with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds.
In the consolation game, the Retrievers jumped out ahead early taking an 8-3 lead over the Gaels before a 9-0 run put Iona ahead as they lead into the break, 28-23. In the second half, the Gaels took advantage of a scoring drought by the Retrievers that stretch from just over 15 minutes to just under eight minutes left in regulation, scoring 22 unanswered points to pull ahead 59-30. The Gaels then cruised down the stretch to pick up their first win of the season.
Michelle Fahy scored 15 points and Meg Abele tallied 18 points to lead the Gaels while Anastasia Goncharova hit four treys to score 12 points and Mariana Santos pulled down seven boards to pace the Retrievers.
