Hartford, CT--Junior forward Derek McElligott scored two second-half goals to lead UMBC past Hartford 3-0 in America East men's soccer action on Saturday night at rain-soaked Al-Marzook Field.
McElligott has 11 goals through 10 games this season, and has scored twice in each of UMBC's last three games. He has 35 career scores in 47 contests, and only trails Giuliano Celenza's 41 career goals in UMBC's 18-year Division I history.
The Retrievers (5-1-4, 1-0-2 America East) picked up their first conference victory
of the season with the win while the Hawks (6-5-1, 1-1-0 America East) suffered
their first home loss of the year. UMBC snapped a four-game winless streak (0-1-3) in the process.
UMBC got on the board at 27:11 when George Bakoulas found the back of the net from
20 yards out on a Michael Joseph corner kick that put the Retrievers ahead 1-0. Matt McGowan added an assist as he played the ball to Bakoulas.
The Retrievers struck again just 4:25 into the second half when McElligott scored
his tenth goal of the season on a feed from Bakoulas to put UMBC in front 2-0. Danny Mongello initiated the play to Bakoulas.
McElligott tallied his second goal of the match at 75:29 on a breakaway started by a
long pass from Kevin Mezzadra to give the Retrievers a 3-0 advantage. Joseph was credited with a second assist.
UMBC goalkeeper Andy Marchica made six saves to earn the shutout
