Baltimore, MD - "The UMBC men's soccer team (9-1-5) extended its unbeaten streak to eight with a 3-0 victory over Mt. St. Mary's (4-6-1) in a non-conference match-up of local rivals.
The Retrievers struck twice in the first 7:29 of the game. At the 2:57 mark, junior forward George Bakoulas was hauled down a few strides in the box, and junior forward Derek McElligott converted on the penalty kick to give UMBC a 1-0 advantage. It was McElligott's 14th goal of the season. Then, at 7:29, junior defender Steve Blakely sent a long ball over the Mount defense, and Bakoulas was able to run it down, and beat Mount netminder Mark Murphy from 10 yards out inside the right post.
Senior midfielder Marco Angelini added an insurance marker with a spectacular shot at then 52:07 mark. With Murphy well out of the net to get to a loose ball, Angelini pounced of the clearing attempt, and scored from 38 yards out into the far right corner of the net.
The Mount only managed five shots, and Retriever netminder Andy Marchica needed to make just one save to record his seventh shutout of the season. Marchica has permitted just one score in the last four games. Murphy made 4 saves, while playing the first 80 minutes for the visitors.
The Retrievers are 5-0-3 since a 2-0 loss to fourth-ranked Old Dominion (currently 12-0) in Norfolk on September 24. UMBC is 4-0-3 with a America East-leading 15 points in the conference, and will host second-place Boston University (3-0-2 AEC) on Saturday.
