Holt comes to UMBC after one season at Harris-Stowe State University where he served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Holt's team improved tremendously from the teams prior to him arriving in St. Louis. 
Prior to going to Harris-Stowe, Holt had a stint at Alabama State University where he was the assistant women's basketball coach from 2016-2021. While at Alabama State, Holt helped lead the Hornets to a 48-41 overall record in the Southwestern Atlantic Conference and a runner-up finish in the 2021 SWAC Women's Basketball Conference Tournament. His job duties at Alabama State included on floor coaching, game preparation, scouting, recruiting, travel, and individual improvement. He was instrumental in recruiting five First Team All-SWAC recipients, as well as three Second Team All-SWAC recipients, while also assisting in the development of the 2017 SWAC Player of the Year, Brittany Wright.

Prior to his time at Alabama State, Holt spent 23 seasons at Alabama A&M University. He started with the men's basketball team as a student assistant in 1993 and quickly worked his way up to a full-time assistant. He worked in men’s basketball until 2000 and then made the switch to women's basketball. While with the women's team at Alabama A&M, he assisted the head coach with all aspects of the program including game preparation, scouting, recruiting, travel, and individual workouts. He recruited two SWAC Player of the Year recipients (Whiquitta Tobar and Katrich Williams), six First Team All-SWAC selections, and four Second Team All-SWAC selections in 11 seasons with the program. Following his time with the women's basketball at Alabama A&M, he moved back over to the men's basketball where he coached the Bulldogs as an assistant coach from 2011-2016.

Holt was standout player at Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, Holt also played two seasons at Snead State Community College. He then decided to pursue his coaching career at Alabama A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications and General Business. He also holds a Masters of Science in Management from Argosy University.

Coach Holt and his wife Tabatha have been married for 22 years. They have two children, Diamond Holt who is 22 a nursing student at Troy University and Dexter "DJ" Holt Jr. who is 19 and is an Airman in the United States Air Force.
