Mikey Herring

Mikey Herring joined the UMBC men's lacrosse staff in July, 2022.

Herring completed a very successful four-year tenure as offensive coordinator at VMI. In addition, he served last year as the Keydets' recruiting coordinator for the 2021-22 academic year.

During the 2022 season, the VMI offense had its best year under Herring's direction. The Keydets improved its goals-per-game and scored the most goals in a season in 22 years. Under Herring's guidance, junior midfielder Hartley Jordan was named First Team All-SoCon and freshman attackman Luke Rusterucci was named to the All-Freshman team. The Keydets won their first conference game in eight years and qualified for the playoffs for the second time in the program's history. Herring served as an assistant to Head Coach James Purpura at the 2022 USILA North/South Senior All-Star Game.

Herring came to VMI after a stellar playing career at the University of Virginia. As a senior, the Cavaliers captured the national championship over Yale, their first since 2011. During Herring's time at UVA, he accumulated 80 points, including 34 goals and 46 assists. In 2018, he was second on the team in assists with 18. He also was awarded the Class of 1986 Unsung Hero Award for the 2018 season.

Herring also has professional playing experience, most recently with Boston Cannons of the MLL. Herring was drafted 34th overall in the MLL Supplemental Draft and suited up with the Cannons in 2019. Herring was also drafted 75th overall by the Georgia Swarm in the 2019 NLL Draft.

The Dedham, Massachusetts, native earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Virginia in 2019.

They Said It…
"I am very excited that we were able to add Coach Herring to our staff.  In meeting and spending time with him through the interview process, it was very clear that he has a very strong mind for the game, especially on the offensive side of the ball.  I truly believe we are going to make positive strides with him directing the offense.  Additionally his approach to culture and student- athlete development aligned perfectly with our blueprint for UMBC Lacrosse."  "Mikey is a rising star in the coaching industry.  He was a coach on the field and in the UVA huddles as a player.  His insight and his play made UVA Lacrosse a more dangerous offensive team.  It is only natural Mikey has taken to the coaching profession so quickly and effectively."
