Rory Costello

  • Title
    Pitching Coach
Rory was hired in August of 2021 to serve as Director of Baseball Operations. He is originally from Ellicott City, MD where he currently resides with his family. Rory is a 2021 graduate of York College where he was a RHP for the York Baseball Team. At York he was a part of the 2021 Regional team when he pitched 38.1 innings and only walked 4 batters.

Entering his fourth season with the UMBC Retrievers,  Costello has quickly established himself as a pivotal figure in the team's success. Under his guidance, the Retrievers achieved a remarkable 5.01 ERA during the 2024 regular season, leading the conference and marking the lowest ERA in the America East over the past 23-24 seasons at 5.12.

In 2023, his coaching prowess contributed to a school record of 420 strikeouts, and in 2024, he helped set a new benchmark with a .272 batting average against. One of his standout mentees, Luke Johnson, became a two-time America East Pitcher of the Year, securing his place as UMBC's career leader in strikeouts and starts before being drafted in the 10th round by the Washington Nationals.

Thanks to Coach Costello's techniques and strategic insights, the pitching staff's ERA improved by over a run from 2023 to 2024, solidifying his reputation as a leading pitching coach in collegiate baseball.
