2012-13: Did not dress for the ?rst twogames, su?ering from a lower body ailment... Suited up at Loyola onNov. 14, but did not play... Saw ?rst action of the year vs. CCSUon Nov. 20, scoring a ?eld goal in 2 minutes... Gave Retrievers aspark o? the bench with 10 points in 15 minutes vs. Canisiuson Nov. 29 and did so again in front of family and friends with 10points at Norfolk State on Dec. 9… In 44 career America Eastgames, he has hit 23 of 48 three-point ?eld goal attempts(47.9%).

 

2011-12: Started the opener vs. Penn onNov. 11, but left the game with a lower body injury in the secondhalf and did not return... Started at St. John’s on Nov. 13,but did not start and played a only four minutes vs. Loyola on Nov.17... Scored eight points in a key 24-minute stint at Towson onDec. 10 and added nine points and seven caroms vs. Rider in 30minutes of action on Dec. 17... Played a key role inconference-opening victory at UNH on Jan. 2, scoring 11 points andsetting career mark with eight caroms in 24 minutes... Tallied acareer-best 12 points, all in the second half, at Boston U. on Jan.24... Returned to double figures in another Retriever win,scoring 10 points (3/3 fg) in 70-56 victory at Binghamton on Feb.15.

 

2010-11: Madehis first appearance in a UMBC uniform on Nov. 14 vs. VMI andscored one point, added three rebounds and a steal... Saw increasedaction and scored six points in 21 minutes at Loyola on Nov. 17...Converted on three field goals in four consecutive games (Nov.17-Nov. 27) and is averaged 8.0 ppg in that span... Snared aseason-best six rebounds, tying Adrian Satchell for team-highhonors, in Dec. 3 contest at U. Conn... Scored 11 points in 20minutes vs. Towson on Dec. 11... Matched that season-high with 11points in 19 minutes at Notre Dame on Dec. 22... Corralled sevenrebounds vs. Niagara on Dec. 30... Did not score, but made play ofthe night, as his leaping save of an errant shot with 4.4 secondsremaining resulted in Justin Fry’s two free throws to providethe margin of victory... The lone Retriever to hit 50 percent fromthe floor vs. Stony Brook, converting 4-of-8 in a 10-point effort... Played 25 minutes, scoring nine points and tying season-bestwith seven caroms at Binghamton on Jan. 12... Earned his firstcollegiate start at Vermont on Jan. 15... Buried a season-bestthree treys in a 26-minute effort vs. Boston U. on Jan. 17... Was13-of-29 (44.8%) from behind the arc in league play...Played 30minutes at Boston U. and vs. Hartford in back-to-back games on Feb.15 and 19... Tied season highs with 11 points and seven caroms vs.the Hawks... Played season-high 32 minutes at Albany on Feb. 23 andposted nine points and six rebounds… Averaged 8.5 points and5.0 rebounds per game over the last four regular season contestsand played more minutes in the final three than any of the prior 26contests.

  

2009-10: Underwentarthroscopic knee surgery in early November… Returned topractice in January, but did not dress or compete in anycontests.

 

Background: Named to the Virginia High SchoolCoaches Association Group and the Virginia Associated Press AAASecond-Team All-State boys’ basketball squad after the2008-09 season… Averaged 14.2 points per game last seasonand helped the Bulldogs (31-1) win the VHSL boys’ basketballstate championship… Buried 63 three-point field goals, hit73.5 percent from the free throw line, and also averaged sixrebounds and 2.3 steals per contest… A First-TeamAll-Eastern Region, First-Team All-City and a Second-TeamAll-Tidewater honoree…A three-time First-TeamAll-Southeastern District selection, as tabbed by TheSuffolk News-Herald...  As a junior, he helped theBulldogs to the Southeastern District tournament title and a berthin the Group AAA state tournament for the first time in theschool’s young history… A First-Team All-Tidewater andSecond-Team All-Eastern Region honoree as he averaged 17.2 points,8.3 rebounds and three steals a game in 2007-08… Establishedschool career records for three-point field goals (158), freethrows made (384), and points scored (1,701)… Has two olderbrothers, George (25) and Jeremy (22), and a younger sister,Jasmine (16)… Lists his favorite book as TheGiver and his favorite movie as CoachCarter… Son of Monica and George Wertz… BornNov. 16, 1989.
