UMBC Drops Road Match to #22 Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - Flynn Holdem scored his second career goal for UMBC, but the Retrievers fell 5-1 to the 22nd-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday evening at ODU Soccer Stadium. 

The Monarchs entered the contest with the top goal differential in Division I thanks to a pair of shutouts and a pair of five-plus-goal efforts. 

ODU jumped ahead early, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes. The Monarchs extended the lead to 3-0 in the 28th minute, before Holdem put the Retrievers on the board in the 40th, pulling UMBC within two goals before the half. 

Lewis Rourke scored his second goal of the match in the 51st minute, pushing the lead to 4-1. After a Joe Pollard save in the 62nd minute, Aidom Tadesse tried to put another one home for UMBC in the 63rd, but was turned away by Alexander Aguilar. Pollard turned another pair of shots away in the 71st and 83rd minutes, but UMBC couldn't muster any more shots on target. The Monarchs added their final goal in the 86th minute with UMBC down to 10 men after a red card. 

Pollard made a career-best six saves in the contest, while Aguilar stopped three shots for ODU. 

UMBC returns to Retriever Soccer Park on Tuesday evening as they host Howard at 7 p.m. Tuesday's contest will be a Double Punch Game for Retriever Rewards, and fans will receive free Lot 17 shirts while supplies last.
