Burr Wins Gold in Javelin on Day One of America East Championships

LOWELL, Mass. - Toren Burr picked up UMBC's first gold medal of the America East Outdoor Championships in the javelin to lead the Retrievers on Day One in Massachusetts.

Burr set a new personal best in the javelin with a 64.66-meter throw to win the event and pick up 10 points for the Retrievers. Burr ranks fourth all-time on the UMBC performance list. Fellow thrower Scott Gersten finished fifth in the event with a 58.65-meter toss. 

Daniel Danilovitz and John Saltysiak earned points for UMBC in the 10,000, finishing fourth and sixth respectively. Danilovitz finished in 30:10.58, while Saltysiak set a new personal best with a time of 30:29.55, ranking fourth on the UMBC performance list. 

The Retrievers had five athletes place first in qualifiers, led by Ojigwe Olua, who set a PR in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.10. He ranks second all-time on the UMBC list. Cameron Hayes and Malik Aremu qualified fifth and eighth in the event. 

Justin Banks qualified first in the 1,500, clocking a time of 3:51.68, leading a pack of three Retrievers in the top six of the event. Ryan Hartranft took second with a time of 3:54.03, while Grayson Ruffner qualified sixth, finishing in 3:56.76.

Alim Raji set a PR time in the 100, winning the preliminary round with a time of 10.46, moving him up to fifth all-time on the UMBC list. 

Justin Febles qualified first in the 400 hurdles, running the race in 52.76 seconds. 

Martin Ojulu, Karell Clement, and Raji finished 1-2-3 in the 200, with Ojulu moving into fifth all-time on UMBC's performance list with a time of 21.21. Clement took second, running the race in 21.65, while Raji qualified for his second event with a time of 21.67. 

Jacob Martin, Joey Ensor, and Sofiane Compaorg also qualified for the finals in their respective events. Martin took fourth in the 400 with a time of 48.40, while Ensor and Compaorg finished third and eighth in the 800 with times of 1:52.13 and 1:52.74. 

UMBC sits in fifth after the first day of the event with 22 points. New Hampshire holds the current lead through five tallied events with 33 points.
