BALTIMORE - After tying the game in the bottom of the seventh inning at 6-6, UMBC used a six-run eighth to defeat UAlbany 12-6 on Sunday afternoon, taking the series victory. The Retrievers improved to 22-20 on the season and 10-8 in the America East.
Anthony Mascuilli had a four-hit day for UMBC, slugging his second homer of the season and driving in five runs to lead the offensive effort.
Brooks Henderson and
Joe Lomangino each drove in a pair of runs in the win.
UMBC jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third, starting the scoring with Mascuilli's three-run shot to center.
Derek Paris made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring
Ehi Okojie. Henderson then laced a two-out double to left, scoring
Danny Orr to make it 5-0.
UAlbany pushed a run across in the fourth before chasing UMBC starter
Sergio Droz in the fifth and taking a 6-5 lead on a Jaxon Mueller RBI single in the inning.
The Retrievers struck back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, getting a monster pinch hit double from
Chris Harbert, setting up Mascuilli to tie the game later in the inning with a single up the middle.
UMBC broke it open against Michael Mariano in the eighth, as Henderson gave UMBC a 7-6 lead with a double to score Orr.
Joe Lomangino, who entered to pinch run for Harbert, singled to left, scoring Henderson and Paris to put UMBC up by three. After Ryan Pittz entered on the mound for UAlbany, Mascuilli drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a
Danny Wyatt sacrifice fly and a wild pitch to score
Dylan Melton.
Brady Fox completed his fifth inning of the game in the ninth to secure the win, his third of the season. Fox allowed four hits and struck out six in 5.0 innings on the bump.
