Retrievers Kick Off Series With 11-5 Win Over UAlbany

BALTIMOREUMBC kicked off the three-game set with UAlbany with an 11-5 victory on Friday night at Alumni Field. The Retrievers improved to 21-19 and 9-7 in the America East with the win.

The Retrievers scored at least one run in each inning from the second through the seventh, scoring multiple runs in three of those frames.

UAlbany took the lead in the top of the second before the Retrievers added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half. Derek Paris started things off with a two-out single, advancing to third as Kyle Eddington reached on an error. Brooks Henderson fought one off to right field, driving in Paris, before Dylan Melton drove in Eddington with an RBI single of his own.

Ehi Okojie made it 3-1 Retrievers with his 10th blast of the season, a deep shot to dead center.

The Great Danes pulled back within one in the fourth, but an error with the bases loaded allowed Melton to score in the fourth after he singled to left earlier in the inning.

UMBC began to pull away in the fifth, scoring four runs to build an 8-2 advantage. Danny Orr walked, followed by a single from Paris. Eddington advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, allowing Henderson to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly. Jacob Bagania drove in Paris with an RBI single to right before scoring on a two-run blast off the bat of Melton.

UAlbany scored three in the top of the sixth, but UMBC answered again, adding two more to make it a 10-5 game through six thanks to a two-run double from Eddington.

Wyatt and Okojie drew two out walks in the seventh, allowing Orr to drive in Wyatt and make it 11-5.

Eddie Sargent earned his third win of the season, tossing 5.2 innings for the Retrievers. Bennett Speicher earned his first career save, finishing the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit in the process.

Paris went 4-5 at the plate, recording his first career four-hit day, while adding three runs. Melton recorded his fifth three-hit game of the season, slugging his first homer as a Retriever. Okojie and Henderson also had multi-hit days for UMBC.
