BALTIMORE --
Ehi Okojie hit a tie-breaking two run homer in the bottom of the seventh as the UMBC baseball team rallied from a four run deficit to defeat visiting Maine, 7-5, on Friday in the America East opener for both teams.
Maine took a 4-0 lead in the third on a grand slam, but UMBC would respond in the bottom of the fourth.
Okojie walked to lead off the inning and
Danny Wyatt and
Danny Orr each singled to load the bases.
Derek Paris made it 4-1 when he scored Okojie on a fielder's choice, and with runners at the corners,
Kyle Eddington laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Wyatt and make it 4-2.
Carver Salazar then drove in Paris from second with a two out single to cut the Maine lead to 4-3.Â
UMBC (8-8, 1-0 AE) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when
Anthony Mascuilli ripped a two out single, stole second and scored on an Okojie single. The Retrievers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Orr walked and Paris hit a double. After a strikeout and a walk to load the bases, the Dawgs once again used small ball as
Jesiah Carpenter put down a great squeeze bunt to score Orr and give UMBC a 5-4 lead.
The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but UMBC responded immediately as Mascuilli hit a leadoff single and Okojie followed with a no-doubt homer to left.Â
Brady Fox picked up the save as he was dominant in two perfect innings of work. Striking out three and throwing 15 strikes on 17 pitches.
Kailen Hackmann earned his second win of the season as he allowed just a run on two hits with two strike outs in two innings of relief.Â
Game two of the series will be Saturday at 2:30
