Boca Raton, Fla. -- The UMBC Baseball team was a strike away from victory in both the ninth and the 11th, but the host Florida Atlantic Owls rallied for a 10-9 win on Friday night.
UMBC held a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth with a runner on, two strikes and two outs but a two-run homer tied the game. In the 11th, the Dawgs were up 9-6 with two outs and one on, but the Owls would come back and win it on a two-strike, two-RBI single.
All nine Retriever starters had at least one hit, with
Jesiah Carpenter leading the way with a 3-for-5 day.
Ehi Okojie went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles, while
Derek Paris went 2-for-five with a three-run double in the 11th.
Danny Orr hit a solo homer for UMBC.
Brady Fox was sensational in relief, going 4.0 innings, while allowing just two runs and three hits with three strikeouts.
Game two of the series will now be at noon on Saturday due to expected weather.
