Riggs Honored as America East Co-Player of the Week; Softball Hosts Lehigh for Wednesday Doubleheader

BOSTON -- After a sensational day at the plate, Emily Riggs has been named the America East Co-Player of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

In a doubleheader against Morgan State, Riggs went 6-for-6 (1.000/1.333/2.333) with two walks, two doubles and a run scored. The senior third baseman slso had a 1.000 fielding percentage with five putouts and three assists.

The UMBC Softball team will continue its homestand by hosting Lehigh for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.

Last time out, Maggie Frisvold tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base, while sisters Kenzie and Taylor Nicholson each had three hits as the UMBC Softball team picked a 7-0 win in the rubber game of its three game series with visiting Morgan State on Monday.

Frisvold allowed just one hit and walked three, and the contest ended when her sister, freshman Abbie Frisvold, threw out a runner trying to steal second. The younger Frisvold also had a hit and scored a run in the contest. T. Nicholson went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI hits and two runs scored, while her younger sister went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

UMBC got on the board in the second inning on a Catlyn Thrush RBI single that scored T. Nicholson and M. Frisvold scored on an error on the same play. Thrush would later score on a two-out error to make it 3-0 in the second. It became 5-0 in the third when T. Nicholson and Sophie Anderson each had RBI singles.

Riggs made it 6-0 in the fourth on an RBI triple to score K. Nicholson, and T. Nicholson immediately followed with an RBI single of her own to make it 7-0.

Scouting Lehigh:

The Mountain Hawks are 12-6 and junior shortstop Peyton Sward was named Patriot League Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Sward had a big week at the plate for the Mountain Hawks in a 4-0 weekend in New York with doubleheader sweeps at Binghamton and Cornell.

Sward batted .643 over four games, going 9-for-14 at the plate with seven runs scored, two extra-base hits and four runs batted in. She also posted an impressive 1.563 OPS and had at least two hits in all four Lehigh victories.

In Saturday's opening game at Binghamton, Sward went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs. With the game tied at 5-5, Sward delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning that was the difference in a 7-5 Lehigh victory. On Sunday, Sward wet 4-for-6 over both ends of the doubleheader sweep of Cornell. She scored four runs and had a steal of home in both games.

For the season, Sward is batting .429 with her 24 hits ranking second on the team and her 19 runs scored over 18 games tied for the team lead. Sward also has two doubles, two triples and 14 RBIs, while starting all 18 games at shortstop.
