Demato's Big Day Pushes Retrievers Past The Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Ryan Demato scored a career-high four goals, and UMBC scored six of its seven goals in the fourth quarter of a 7-4 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday evening.

After Demato opened the scoring with 9:56 to play in the first quarter, UMBC didn't break through again until the fourth quarter, but the Retrievers opened the floodgates, scoring six more goals to come away victorious.

After falling behind 3-1 49 seconds into the fourth, Demato struck again, pulling UMBC within one at the 12:55 mark. Just over a minute later, Demato made it a hat trick, scoring his third unassisted goal of the game to tie the contest at 3-3.

The Mount jumped back ahead 4-3 on a Kevin Whitty goal with 9:49 to play, but senior defender Dante Marinello added a goal 30 seconds later to tie the contest. Corey Myers struck with 5:55 to play, putting the Retrievers ahead for the first time, 5-4. Demato added a stunning goal, diving through the air before depositing it through the legs of Mountaineer goalie Bennett Wright. Freshman Jack Fish scored the final goal of the day with nine seconds left, giving him a goal in each of his first three collegiate games.

Connor Chick added the lone assist of the day for the Retrievers, while Alex Steers once again won the face-off battle, taking eight of 13.

McMahon made seven saves to earn his first win of the season, adding six ground balls for UMBC. The Retrievers caused 10 turnovers with Marinello, Drew Lapointe, and Jameson Coffman each causing a pair. The trio each had three ground balls, as did Steers.

Tuesday marked the ninth straight season with a meeting between UMBC and Mount St. Mary's. The Retrievers have won four straight and are 30-2 all-time in the matchup.
