ALBANY, N.Y. - UMBC narrowly missed out on a third straight victory, falling in a double overtime thriller to UAlbany on Saturday. Tied at 44-44 at the end of regulation, UAlbany outscored the Retrievers 25-19 across the two overtime periods to steal away the victory.
UAlbany forced overtime in a near-identical scenario to the January meeting, overcoming an eight-point lead late to force overtime.
Kennedy Austin scored with 2:38 left on the clock to put the Retrievers ahead by eight, but the Great Danes scored eight in a row, getting a three from Martina Borrellas with 15 seconds left to force an extra five minutes.Â
After a
Heidi Williams free throw put UMBC back up by three with nine seconds left in overtime, it was Borrellas again who connected from distance to force a second extra period. The Retrievers trailed by seven in the second overtime before
Dagny Slomack connected from deep with 47 seconds left to trim the gap to four. The Great Danes and Retrievers would trade free throws and buckets three more times, but UMBC couldn't get any closer than four as UAlbany closed out the 69-63 win.Â
Six Retrievers finished with seven or more points in the contest, led by a season-high 13 points from
Carmen Yánez, who played the entire 50 minutes.Â
Jade Tillman made it 19 straight games in double figures, contributing 12 points and seven rebounds on 50 percent shooting before fouling out in regulation.
Heidi Williams contributed her third double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.Â
With two games remaining, UMBC sits at 8-6 in the league, tied for fourth with Bryant, with whom they hold a head-to-head tiebreaker. The Retrievers will travel to Smithfield for a crucial matchup on Thursday evening before finishing out the regular season at home against UMass Lowell on Senior Day.Â
