Martin Named America East Indoor Championships' Most Outstanding Rookie as UMBC Men Place Third

BOSTON -- Jacob Martin was named the Most Outstanding Rookie as the UMBC men's indoor track and field team took home the third-place trophy at the 2026 America East Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at Boston University Track & Tennis Center.

Martin won the 500 meters with a UMBC record time of 1:02.81, sophomore Joey Ensor captured the 1,000 meters (2:28.45), and freshman Ojigwe Olua struck gold in the 60-meter hurdles (7.92).

UMBC, which finished with 100 points, finished behind first-place UMass Lowell (172.50) and second-place UAlbany (163). The Retrievers won three individual conference championships and a pair of relay titles.

The Retrievers' 4 x 400 team, consisting of three freshmen, won the event by nearly a second with a time of 3:11.64. Freshman Rhema Nkwocha, sophomore Justin Febles, freshman Kemarley Hibbert, and Martin comprised the quartet.

The distance medley team captured the championship in just over a second with a time of 9:55.88. Sophomore Justin Banks, sophomore Grayson Ruffner, freshman Ryan Hartranft, and senior Fred-Morgan Iheanacho were able to hold off hard-charging New Hampshire.

UMBC also received silver medals from Febles (500 meters, 1:03.36), Banks (mile, 4:10.84), and their 4 x 800 relay squad (7:29.26, Ruffner, sophomore Weston Carr, Ensor, Banks).

Sophomore Alim Raji placed third in the 60 meters (6.82) and the 200 meters (21.66).

Other top-10 performances were turned in by: junior David Adisa (8th, 60 meters, 7.00 and 7th, 200 meters, 22.30), Nkwocha (6th, 400 meters, 48.05), Carr (7th, 800 meters, 1:52.63), Banks (10th, 1,000 meters, 2:30.02), sophomore Daniel Danilovitz (10th, 5,000 meters, 14:35.55), freshman Cameron Hayes (6th, 60-meter hurdles, 8.38), and senior Toren Burr (7th, weight throw, 18.41 meters, 60-05.00.
