Yarborough, Defense Lead Retrievers Past New Hampshire

BALTIMORE - UMBC used a dominant third quarter to pull away from New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena, picking up a 61-44 victory to complete the season sweep of the Wildcats.

Delaney Yarborough was a perfect eight-for-eight from the field, finishing with a career-high 21 points, three rebounds, and two blocks off the bench to lead UMBC. Jade Tillman finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals, extending her double-digit scoring streak to 17 games in the victory. Dagny Slomack gave the Retrievers eight points off the bench, while Heidi Williams added seven points and seven rebounds.

Defensively, the Retrievers caused New Hampshire fits, as they held their eighth opponent of the season to less than 50 points. The Wildcats' 22 turnovers marked the 10th time this season in which UMBC has forced its opponent to turn it over 20-plus times.

After taking a three-point advantage into the locker room at halftime, UMBC locked in even further defensively, allowing just five third-quarter points as it built its lead to 13 after three quarters. The Wildcats shot just 2-11 from the floor in the quarter, turning it over five times as well.

A Yarborough bucket and a Williams three-point play pushed the UMBC lead to 16 with 8:10 remaining before a positive stretch for the Wildcats made it an eight-point game with 4:25 left. UMBC would go on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, capping it off with a Gabby Scott layup to go ahead 59-42 before closing out a 17-point win.

The Retrievers dominated in multiple statistical categories, winning the battles in points off turnovers (24-8), points in the paint (36-24), and bench points (33-10). Shooting 15-18 from the foul line, UMBC recorded its sixth game this season shooting 80 percent or better from the charity stripe.

With six assists in the game, Carmen Yanez surpassed 250 for her career, moving into 12th place all-time on the UMBC career list with 254. She is one of just three Retrievers in the top-12 with less than 100 games played. Her 95 assists this season also tie her with Sharri Rhode for 10th all-time on the UMBC senior single-season list.

With two free throws made today, Tillman moves into a tie for seventh on the all-time juniors list with 95. Williams took over eighth place on the freshman steals list with 46.

Eva DeChent finished with 15 points, and Lucia Melero added 10 points and six rebounds for New Hampshire.

UMBC travels to Vermont next Thursday, kicking off a stretch of three straight road games before returning home for the regular season finale.
