Frisvold Dominant in Season-Opening Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Spartanburg, S.C. – Maggie Frisvold tossed a complete game shutout with a career-high 11 strikeouts to lead the UMBC Softball team to a 7-0 season-opening victory over St. Bonaventure's on Friday afternoon at the Wofford Invitational.

In the night cap the Retrievers fell 9-1 in six innings to host Wofford.

In game one, Sophie Anderson put the Dawgs up 1-0 in the second when she drove in a run on a grounder, and it became 2-0 in the third when Kenzie Nicholson scored on a double play. The Retrievers blew the game open in the fourth inning when Nicholson drove in Anderson with a sacrifice fly, Amya Lundy had a two-run single and Emily Riggs then followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0. Riggs would cap the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. 

Abbie Frisvold had two hits and two runs scored in her first career game, while both Nicholson and her sister Taylor Nicholson also had two hits. Ella Squaires singled and scored a run, M.Frisvold was hit by a pitch and Lundy drew a walk. A. Frisvold, M. Frisvold, K. Nicholson, Anderson and Amaya Carroll all stole a base for UMBC.

In game two, T. Nicholson went 2-for-2 with an RBI hit to score Lundy, who had UMBC's other hit. Freshmen pitchers Jayda Koontz and Elena Clark-Wilson combined to strikeout seven and allow just four hits in 4.1 innings of work. 

The Retrievers face UNCW tomorrow at 10 a.m. followed by a rematch with the host Terriers at 3 p.m. on ESPN+
