Raining Goals; Women's Soccer Overpowers UAlbany 5-0 for Third Straight Win

BALTIMORE – The red-hot UMBC women's soccer team matched a season high with five goals, and the Retrievers went on to a 5-0 blowout victory over America East rival UAlbany Sunday afternoon at rainy Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC, now second in the league standings with nine points, has won three consecutive league contests to improve to 3-1 and upped its overall record to 9-3-2. One more win would give the Dawgs their first double-digit win season since they finished 12-4-3 in 2014.  The three conference victories are the most since they went 3-3-2 in 2015.

The goals came early and often as the hosts led 3-0 at halftime and added two more over the final 45 minutes.

Freshman sensation Brooke Clagett produced her league-high fourth game-winning goal just 12:28 into the contest. After a throw-in along the right side, senior forward Payton Schenning played a ball to the corner for junior defender Gabby Larson. Larson then crossed it into the center of the box for Clagett, who tapped in her sixth marker from five yards out into the lower left corner of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Zoe Brossman matched Clagett with her sixth tally of the season just seven minutes later. Sophomore center back Hailey Ahmed drilled a long free kick from near midfield into the box for Brossman, who played the ball with her chest and then beat UAlbany goalkeeper Claudia Volino with a tap into the lower right corner.

Sophomore Olivia Nardone struck in the 31st minute to make it 3-0.  Schenning started the sequence with a dangerous corner for sophomore Delainey Proctor. Proctor tried to head the ball in, but it clanked off the crossbar. Nardone followed up with her left foot for her third marker of the season.

Sophomore forward Nia Hudson came off the bench in the 60th minute and produced a gorgeous unassisted goal just a minute later. Hudson, who recorded her second marker, won a ball along the right sideline, took a few dribbles to her left, and then sent a rocket into the upper right corner from just outside the top corner of the box.

Ahmed put the icing on the cake when she converted a long free kick from near the right sideline into the middle of the net. It was her third tally of the campaign.

Junior Amara Codd pitched her fifth shutout of the season after making four saves.

Clagett and Brossman have both produced six goals and two assists this season. Ahmed and Proctor are now tied for the team-lead in assists (3) with graduate forward Cece Price

UMBC will host Binghamton next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
