Towson, MD – The UMBC women's soccer team secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Towson Tigers on Thursday evening at Tiger Stadium.
UMBC (3-2-2) started strong with junior forward
Payton Schenning, who finished with six shots and created several opportunities to give her team the lead.
The Retrievers struck first just 8 minutes and 8 seconds into the match when Schenning converted on her third chance of the contest. Junior defender
Reagan Casper initiated the play with a long through ball from UMBC's defensive end, which rolled to Schenning at the top of the Tigers' box. Schenning used her strength to fend off a defender and sent a low shot that evaded Towson goalie Teagan Gardner, who recorded four saves. This goal marked Schenning's second of the season.
Towson (1-2-2) responded quickly, seeking an equalizer just four minutes later. Graduate student keeper
Kalli Williams made an impressive diving save with her left hand on a shot from Kale'a Perry, resulting in a corner kick for the Tigers. The Tigers managed to equalize with just over four minutes left in the first half.
Riley Matthews won a ball on UMBC's 30-yard line and played it wide to Sydney Feiler on the right side of the box. Feiler successfully beat Williams after the goalie came off her line.
In the second half, UMBC had a notable scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute when
Rian Stainton found
Maddie Schepers inside the box. However, Scheppers' shot went straight to Gardner, who made a routine save.
Williams saved the day for UMBC with just over eleven minutes remaining, charging out to the seven-yard line to block a shot from a wide-open Sophie Thibault, preventing a potential game-winner.
Towson outshot UMBC 23 to 9, and the Tigers took eight corner kicks, while the Retrievers had none.
UMBC will travel to American University on Sunday at 4 PM.
