Volleyball Begins America East Play at NJIT on Friday

The UMBC Volleyball team begins its America East schedule when it heads to NJIT on Friday night for a 6 p.m. start on AmericaEast.TV.

Last time out Izzy Ostvig recorded the second triple-double of the season and her career to lead the UMBC Volleyball team to a come-from-behind five set win (25-18, 18-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-11) over Howard on Saturday at The Peake.

Ostvig tallied 10 kills, 15 digs and 28 assists in recording the fourth triple-double in program history. Claudia Llamas had a team-best 14 kills, and the pair of Hannah Dobbs and Laura Fuehrer added 10 kills each in the victory.

Jalynn Brown had a career-high 20 digs to go with eight kills, Helen Frankovich also had eight kills and three blocks, and Hannah Howard tallied a match-best 24 digs and added seven digs.

The Bison entered the day leading the nation with 2.85 aces per set, yet the Retrievers held HU to just three aces over the five sets.

Scouting NJIT:
  • The NJIT women's volleyball team fell to visiting FDU in four sets on Wednesday night to fall to 3-10 on the season
  • The Highlanders commanded most of the opening set jumping ahead to a 16-9 lead, but FDU was able to build some momentum after an early timeout. The Knights were able to use that momentum to regain the lead late in the first set, but the Highlanders showed fight as they battled point for point with the Knights. Despite the Highlanders' resilience, the Knights were able to pull away and take the lead.
  • In the second set of the match, the Highlanders grabbed the opening point but quickly fell behind as the aggressive attack from the Knights continued over from the first set. Much like the Knights in set one, the Highlanders out of a timeout went on a 4-0 run to get back within striking distance and stayed with two of the Knights throughout the set. However, the Knights were able to pull away and gain a two-set lead.
  • The third set of the match was dominated by the Knights from start however the Highlanders were able to draw within two points of the Knights late in the set and went on a run to close out the set and secure the set win to keep the match alive.
  • The fourth and final set of the match was much like the third set which was dominated by the Knights from the start. Unlike the previous set, the Knights were able to close out the set and win the midweek matchup.
  • Senior outside hitter Mariana Cova led the way for the Highlanders, leading the team with 12 points, 11 kills and 16 digs.
