Baltimore – The UMBC men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season as they fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 1-0, on Friday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
Old Dominion (2-2-2) scored with 12:03 remaining in the contest as Lewis Rourke beat UMBC senior goalie
Emigdio Tormo Lopez (three saves) with a low shot inside the far post. Marcelo Randolf initiated the play with a long arching service from behind the midfield line. Rourke raced past a Retriever defender and settled the ball just outside of the right side of the box. He then advanced the ball a few yards and struck the game-winner from 10 yards out.
UMBC (4-1-1) had its best chance to get the equalizer with 9:15 remaining after sophomore
Gunder Miller sent an excellent ball for junior
Ryan Calheira in the middle of the box. His shot, however, from five yards away was blocked by a defender.
The visitors took 12 shots in the contest and held the Retrievers to six chances. The Retrievers did have five corner kicks compared to just two by Old Dominion.
UMBC travels to Navy on Tuesday evening.
