Women's Soccer Goes Toe-to-Toe with Maryland on Thursday

College Park, Md. -- The UMBC Women's Soccer team managed to slow down one of the highest scoring teams in the nation, but ultimately fell, 1-0, to host Maryland on Thursday night.

Maryland (3-0-0)  entered the game averaging four goals per game, but the Retrievers held them to just five shots on goal in the contest. Despite allowing the lone goal in the 18th minute, senior Sara Gavagan made two stops in the first half, while graduate student Kalli Williams made a save in the second. The UMBC backline also cleared a ball off the line in the 83rd minute.

Sophomore Gabby Larson and junior Payton Schenning had shots for the Retrievers.

Ellie Egeland scored the lone goal in the 18th minute with her first-career goal. A corner kick from Ava Morales found the head of Alyssa Abramson and deflected to Egeland, who netted the game winner.

UMBC (1-1-1)  will host Iona on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
