Molessa Mashes Three of UMBC's Seven Homers in Run-Rule Victory Over Binghamton

BALTIMORE -- Leewood Molessa hit three of UMBC's seven home runs as the host Retrievers defeated Binghamton via run-rule, 19-9, in seven innings on Friday night.

The Retrievers mashed 26 hits in 6.2 innings of work, as Danny Orr's bases loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored Sergio Droz and ended the game. The game featured 13 combined home runs.

All eight Retrievers who had a hit had at least two, Droz led all players with five, as had a hit in all five of his at-bat's, scoring four runs and stealing a base. Jesiah Carpenter went 4-for-6 with three RBI, while Nick Pratt went 4-for-5 with two RBI and his first career homer. Molessa went 3-for-6 with six RBI, while Orr and Kyle Eddington each went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a homer. Danny Wyatt went 2-for-5 with a home run, and Anthony Mascuilli went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of walks.

The Retrievers fell behind 2-0 in the first on back-to-back homers by BU, but Molessa hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning to halve the lead. After a scoreless third, Binghamton went back-to-back again to push the lead to 5-1, before the Dawgs exploded for eight runs in the bottom half. Molessa (3-run), Orr and Wyatt went back-to-back-to-back, and Pratt made it four homers in five batters with his first career bomb. Carpenter and Mascuilli would each add RBI singles to make it 9-5.

After the Bearcats cut it to 9-6 in the top of the fourth, Pratt doubled home Wyatt and Eddington immediately followed with a two-run plast to make it a 12-6 game.The guests would add one in the fifth and two in the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-9, but UMBC would respond in the bottom half. Pratt would hit a lead off double, move to third on a Droz single and score on a failed pickoff, carpenter then drove in Droz with an RBI single before Molessa's third homer of the game made it 16-9.

After a scoreless top of the seventh, Pratt, Eddington and Droz hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases. Mascuilli then forced in a run with a walk, and two batters later Orr ended it with his single.

The two teams will play a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Game one will be a seven inning contest.
