Softball Defeats UAlbany to Take Series

BALTIMORE -- Emily Riggs homered and Kya Matter pitched her second straight complete game to lead the UMBC Softball team to a 5-1 victory in game two of Sunday's double header against UAlbany to take the series. UAlbany rallied for an 8-6 win in Sunday's game one.

Riggs homered in the first inning to put UMBC up for good, Ella Squaires had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth, and Phoebe Florian had an RBI double and scored a pair of runs.

Matter struck out seven and allowed just four hits in the contest. Florian and Squaires were the only players in the contest with multiple hits, while Haley Luginbill, Erin Behel, Maggie Frisvold and Abby Brenowitz also had hits.

In game one, all six UMBC runs were unearned after UAlbany errors extended innings. Amya Carroll had an RBI single and Frisvold had a two-run double.

The Retrievers will host Bryant for its final home series of the season next weekend. The series begins with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
