Softball Welcomes UAlbany to The Diamond

The UMBC Softball team begins it's final home stand of the season by hosting defending America East champion UAlbany for three games this weekend.

First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Sunday is a noon doubleheader.

Last time out, Jolie Torrens hit a pinch-hit two run homer in the eighth inning in game one, and Kya Matter struck out 11 in a complete game one-hitter in game two as the UMBC Softball team swept a doubleheader at Maine to complete the three game sweep.

The Retrievers took game one, 4-2, in eight innings, and then cruised to a 6-1 victory in game two.

Haley Luginbill and Jerzie Nutile each homered in game two, while Maggie Frisvold pitched the final four innings in relief in game one to earn the victory.

In game one, Abby Brenowitz and Nutile each had two hits, while Erin Behel and Emily Riggs each had RBI hits.  Torrens' pinch-hit, two-run, two-out homer in the eighth scored Frisvold to account for the final winning runs.  Amya Lundy had a hit and a stolen base in the contest.

The Retrievers went up 1-0 in the second on an Amaya Carroll bloop to score Lundy, and they took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Nutile's solo homer. A Torrens sacrifice fly in the fourth plated Carroll and made it 3-0, before Luginbill's three-run blast in the sixth made it 6-0.

Matter gave up her only hit of the game on a two out single in the bottom of the sixth that scored the Black Bears only run of the game.
