BALTIMORE --
Jerzie Nutile blasted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, to help lead the UMBC Softball team to a 12-7 win over visiting Rhode Island to conclude Day One of the UMBC Round Robin #1 on Friday afteroon.
The Retrievers dropped a 4-0 decision to Holy Cross in the opener, which featured hits from
Amaya Carroll,
Maggie Frisvold and
Emily Riggs.
In game two, UMBC put up nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first.
Ella Squaires, Carroll and Riggs started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. After a grounder got Squaires at the plate, Nutile smashed the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Frisvold followed with a double,
Amya Lundy was hit by a pitch and
Mikayla Bryant walked to load the bases again before Caitlyn Thrush singled to make it 5-0. Squaries followed with an RBI single of her own and Carroll then walked in another run. After another force out at the plate,
Haley Luginbill hit a two run single to make it 9-0.
The Rams chipped away and eventually cut the deficit to 9-7 with one out in the fourth, as
Kya Matter entered in relief with the tying run at the plate and would escape the jam.
Lundy and Bryant would then hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-7, before Riggs worked a bases loaded walk with two outs to extend the lead to 11-7.
Nutile would leadoff the bottom of the fifth with an opposite field homer to wra the scoring as Matter retired the final seven batters of the game in ordewr to pick up up the win.
All 10 Retrievers who batted recorded at least one hit, as Squaires went 3-for-5 and Luginbill, Lundy and Nutile all had a pair of hits.Â
UMBC faces Rhode Island again at 4:30 on Saturday followed by a contest against Cornell.
