BALTIMORE --
Kya Matter pitched a complete-game one-hitter and had the eventual game-winning two-run triple as the UMBC Softball team defeated visiting UMass Lowell 4-2 on Sunday at The Diamond to earn the serties victory.
Matter, who struck out 13 and allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout on Saturday, struck out seven on Sunday. The only runs came in the third after a pair of walks and a one-out bloop triple that got by a diving outfielder.
UMBC got on the board early, when
Ella Squaires hit a leadoff single up the middle and moved to second on an
Amaya Carroll sacrifice bunt.
Emily Riggs singled to put runners on the corners, and
Jerzie Nutile ripped a single through the left side to put the Dawgs up 1-0. After a pitching change and a foul out, Matter blooped a triple of her own to right to score two and make it 3-0. Carroll would add a leadoff solo homer in the third to account for the final score.
Mikayla Bryant also had a hit for UMBC, while Matter added a walk.
The Retrievers host Binghamton nest weekend.
