BALTIMORE --
Maggie Frisvold dazzled in the circle, pitching a complete-game, and then had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to lead the UMBC Softball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Binghamton on Saturday at The Diamond.
Emily Riggs went 3-3 for three with a homer and two RBI in game one, but the Retrievers dropped a 9-6 eight-inning thriller. Riggs has now equaled her career high with seven homers on the season, matching her total from last year.
Frisvold needed only 91 pitches to get through a career-high eight innings, striking out three and allowing just a pair of solo homers. She shutout the Bearcats for the final six innings.
After a wind-aided solo homer in the top of the first of game two,
Ella Squaires reached on a leadoff infield single and would eventually tie the game on a pair of BU errors. The guests would take the lead right back in the top of the second on a solo homer, but UMBC tied the game back up in the bottom of the third. Riggs drew a one out walk and moved to third on a
Jerzie Nutile double, and then scored on a
Haley Luginbill single.
Binghamton had a few opportunities, including loading the bases with two outs in the fifth, and getting a runner to second with one out in the seventh, but Frisvold escaped both times. The Retrievers put the first two on in the bottom of the seventh after back-to-back singles from
Phoebe Florian and Riggs, but a pop-up and double play ended the threat.
The Bearcats got a pair of two out singles in the top of the eighth, but Frisvold got a flyout to end the threat.
Amya Lundy hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth and moved to third on a
Mikayla Bryant groundout.
Erin Behel, who robbed a homer in the fifth, beat out an infield single before Frisvold won the game by slapping the first pitch she saw through the right side. Behel, Luginbill and Squaires all had two-hit games in the victory.
In game one, Nutile hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth gave UMBC a brief 6-4 lead, but the guests answered back with two in the sixth before scoring three in extras to take the win.
Abby Brenowitz had the first two-hit game of her career, and Lundy added a pinch-hit single. Riggs also had an RBI single in the contest and drew a walk to reach base in all four at bats. Luginbill, who was returning from injury after not playing since March 12, had three hits total on the day.
The rubber game of the series will be on Sunday at noon.
