Softball Hosts Hofstra on Wednesday to Wrap-Up Non-Conference Play

The UMBC Softball team will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule when it hosts Hofstra for a single game on Wednesday at noon.

The Retrievers went 3-2 this past weekend as they hosted the UMBC Roun Robin, falling to Lehigh and Manhattan, but beating Canisius once and Colgate twice.

UMBC won twice on Saturday as they opened the day by defeating Canisius, 8-6, and then shutout Colgate, 3-0.

Maggie Frisvold pitched a complete game and had a 3-run double in game one, and Kya Matter had a complete game shutout in game two.

In game one, Parker Kraus had an RBI double in the first to score Ella Squaires and give the Dawgs a 1-0 lead. Canisius tied it up on a solo homer in the top of the second, but Meghan Shirey ripped an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to give UMBC the lead for good. Frisvold's bases clearing double in the third made it 5-1, Emily Riggs added a two-run homer in the fourth, and Makayla Bryant made it 8-1 with an RBI single. The visitors would storm back and had the tying run at second in the seventh before Frisvold got a flyout to end it.

Riggs, Matter and Behel all had two-hit games for UMBC in the opener, while Frisvold struck out nine in the contest.

In game two, Jerzie Nutile broke a scoreless tie with a fourth inning solo homer. The Retrievers would add a pair of runs in the fifth on an error and a double steal of home. Skyler SmithJolie Torrens and Squaires also had hits for the Retrievers.
