Women’s Basketball Set to Host New Hampshire and Maine

The UMBC Women's Basketball team looks to continue their winning streak as they return home at The Peake. The Retrievers play New Hampshire on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m where students can get a free Chick-Fil-A sandwich. The team will then host Maine on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Dawg Day featuring $1 hot dogs, a Mutts Gone Nuts Halftime performance, and a UMBC fan chain giveaway. 

Last time out, UMBC won 56-48 on the road against UMass Lowell. The Retrievers used a big first quarter, opening the game on an 18-0 run, to propel them to a victory against the River Hawks. 

Jaliena Sanchez led the Retrievers offense with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Jaden Walker had 11 points and seven rebounds. Talia Davis added six points, and Carmen Yánez had eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jordon Lewis had seven points and seven rebounds. Tiara Bellamy had six rebounds in the victory.

Two days before, the Retrievers rallied for a 49-46 win at Bryant. Sanchez had the game-winning layup with 31 seconds. Lewis led the offense for the Retrievers with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Walker had nine points and six rebounds, and two steals. Alaina Williams added six points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

 

Scouting New Hampshire:

  • The Retrievers fell to the Wildcats (8-14, 2-7 AE) earlier this season, 56-39
  • Sophomore guard Eva DeChent led the Wildcats with 24 points, two assists, and two steals. Senior forward Belen Morales Lopez added 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while sophomore guard Maggie Cavanaugh gave the 'Cats three double-digit scorers with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
  • New Hampshire is coming off a 65-54 loss to Maine on Jan.30
  • DeChent scored 29 points in the loss
 

Scouting Maine:

  • The Retrievers dropped a contest to the Black Bears (11-10, 6-2 AE) earlier this season, 61-47.
  • Maine is coming off a 45-39 win against Vermont on Feb.1
  • The Black Bears are on a five game win streak as they snapped Vermont's seven game win streak on Saturday.
  • Sarah Talon led Maine with 11 points off the bench while Asta Blauenfeldt added 11 of her own. 
  • Caroline Bornemann, who drew a big charge with under a minute remaining in regulation, added six points and 12 rebounds while Caroline Dotsey posted nine points off the pine. 
  • Paula Gallego chipped in seven points and nine boards in the victory.
