The UMBC Softball team will continue its arduous non-conference schedule when it heads down to Georgia for a tournament hosted by the #10 Bulldogs. The Retrievers will also face Ohio State and Stetson over the five-game tournament.
UMBC opens play on Friday with a 1 p.m. game against Ohio State, followed by a 6 p.m. contest with Georgia on SEC Netowork+. The Dawgs then face Stetson at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning before a 6 p.m. rematch with the Buckeyes. The weekend closes with 10:30 a.m. Sunday rematch with the Hatters.
After an absolutely scorching week at the plate, UMBC Softball first baseman
Haley Luginbill was named the America East Player of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Luginbill hit .538 (7-of-13) while slugging 1.154 with a .600 on-base percentage, adding two homers, six RBI and five runs scored.
Scouting #10 Georgia:
- The 10th-ranked Georgia softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday, falling to the Clemson Tigers, 5-3, in Georgia's first midweek game.
- Down 3-1 in the fifth, Tyler Ellison blasted a pinch-hit, first-pitch, two-run home run to left to tie the game at 3-all. It was Ellison's second home run of the season.
- Randi Roelling (4-1) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. She struck out three batters.
- Georgia's six hits were combined by six different hitters. Four of Georgia's six hits went for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 home run). Sarah Gordon, Emma Castorri, and Mua Williams all doubled in the game.
- In the series, the home team remains unbeaten in five games between Georgia and Clemson.
Scouting Ohio State:
- The Ohio State softball team is headed home from a weekend trip to Florida with four wins, highlighted on Saturday by a 6-1 triumph over North Florida and a 7-3 victory at UCF. The 4-0 stretch improves the Buckeyes' record to 9-3-1 on the season.
- Senior Reagan Milliken was one of the stars of the night at UCF, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three-run bases loaded double. Her five RBI were a career high and added to a stellar overall weekend performance that saw her bat .333 with three home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
- Ohio State never trailed in the game on Saturday night, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on Milliken's first-inning home run and then taking a 3-1 lead after Skylar Limon hit her first career long ball in the top of the second inning. The biggest hit of the night came in the top of the fourth, as Milliken hit a three-run double with the bases loaded to give the Buckeyes a 7-3 advantage.
- From there, freshman Lorin Boutte kept the Knights off the scoreboard. She picked up her fifth win of the season, this one in relief, by going 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
- In the first game of the day, Ohio State used solo home runs off the bat of Kami Kortokrax, Jasmyn Burns and Kaitlyn Farley to build a 5-0 lead after three innings. Cadyn
- Ruffer provided a go-ahead two-run single in the second inning as well, and Ohio State tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Farley scored on a wild pitch.
- Kennedy Kay went the distance for the second time in a week, pitching a complete game while striking out three and scattering five hits. She improved to 3-1 on the season and has a 1.50 earned run average in her last two winning starts.
Scouting Stetson
- The Stetson Hatters held a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh inning but were unable to hold on, falling 5-3 to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday.
- Hayley Arnold started in the circle for the Hatters, and after a scoreless first inning, Florida Atlantic took a 1-0 lead in the second.
- Stetson quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, with Annabella McClerren driving in Nadia English with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
- The score remained tied until the fourth inning when Stetson took the lead. Dylan Anthony delivered an RBI single, putting the Hatters ahead 2-1.
- Stetson's defense kept Florida Atlantic scoreless, and the Hatters extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning.
- McClerren again came through with an RBI single, but the Hatters' lead slipped away in the seventh.
- The Hatters were were one out away from the win before Florida Atlantic unfortunately scored four times in the top of the seventh and Stetson dropped the game 5-3.
