Softball Begins 2025 Season at East Carolina

The UMBC Softball team will look to begin the 2025 season on a high note as it travels to East Carolina for a tournament to open the season. The Retrievers will No.22 Boston U and Radford in addition to the host Pirates. 

Friday, February 14

UMBC vs No.22 Boston U - 10 a.m.

UMBC vs Radford - 12:30 p.m.

Saturday, February 15

UMBC vs Radford - 9:00 a.m.

UMBC vs East Carolina - 3 p.m.

Sunday, February 16

UMBC vs No.22 Boston U - 10 a.m.

Scouting the Opponents:

Radford Highlanders
  • Last Meeting: UMBC and Radford last faced each other on March 7, 2003, with UMBC securing a 9-1 victory. 
  • All-Time Series: UMBC leads the series 2-0 
  • Current Record: Radford's 2025 is off to a 1-4 start, with their last game against Queens being postponed.
  • Head Coach: Kevin Fagan is in his first season leading the Highlanders.

East Carolina Pirates
  • Last Meeting: This will be the 12th meeting between UMBC and East Carolina. ECU holds the all time record, going 8-3. In the last matchup between the two, UMBC won 6-5 in 2018.
  • Current Record: The Pirates hold a 2-2 record in the 2025 season, coming off a 0-1 versus South Carolina last Sunday.
  • Head Coach: Shane Wilker is in his fourth season at the helm for ECU.
  • Team Highlights: Coming off a successful 2024 season with a 38-19 record—their most wins since 2011—the Pirates are looking to build on their momentum. They secured 13 conference victories in 2024, their most since joining the American Athletic Conference.
     
No.22 Boston University Terriers
  • Last Meeting: This will be the 33rd matchup between UMBC and Boston University, with Boston going 26-6 all-time versus the Retrievers.
  • Current Record: The Terriers have started the 2025 season strong, boasting a 5-0 record.
    Head Coach: Ashley Waters is in her tenth season leading the Terriers.
Team Highlights: Boston University is coming off a successful previous season, having received votes in national polls after advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
