Retrievers Battle to the End at 10th-Ranked Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md.
Jade Tillman, Kennedy Austin, and Heidi Williams all reached double figures as UMBC (1-1) dropped a tough non-conference contest on the road to 10th-ranked Maryland (2-0), 87-54.

Tillman scored a game-high 17 points, grabbing four rebounds and nabbing four steals in the effort. The freshmen duo of Austin and Williams combined for an efficient 26 points, shooting 52 percent from the floor with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Tillman and Williams have now scored in double figures in each of their first two games with the Retrievers.

UMBC went into the half trailing by 12 after shooting 63 percent from the floor in the second quarter and 50 percent for the half. Austin scored 10 points, knocking down threes to end both quarters to keep the Retrievers in it against #10 Maryland as the Terrapins had nine different players score in the opening 20 minutes to build a 40-28 lead.

Williams drilled a three with 5:30 to play in the first quarter, pulling UMBC within a bucket at 10-7, but Maryland would score the next seven points before a Tillman pull-up jumper ended the spurt. Trailing 21-11, Austin banked home a triple just before the buzzer to bring UMBC within seven after 10 minutes of play.

Maryland built the lead to 14 with 4:13 left in the first half before Lauren Thompson drilled her first three of the season. A pair of Kyndal Walker free throws took the lead back to 15 before Austin beat the buzzer again, this time hitting nothing but net off the Carmez Yánez feed to end the half.

The Terrapins opened the third quarter on a 14-0 run, getting three-point makes from Saylor Poffenbarger, Yarden Garzon, and Oluchi Okanawa, growing the lead to 54-28 before a step-back jumper from Austin ended the run. Maryland would outscore UMBC 24-8 in the third, building a 29-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Retrievers battled to the end, tallying 16 points in the fourth, their highest-scoring quarter of the night.
