PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMBC women's basketball fell short in a road contest at UMES on Wednesday afternoon, losing 68-54.
Gabby Scott knocked down a three-pointer 38 seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the Retrievers within two points (48-46) of the Hawks, but a 17-3 run propelled UMES to a home victory.
Jade Tillman and
Carmen Yánez were the top scorers for UMBC with 11 points each. Scott added nine, and
Delaney Yarborough and
Kennedy Austin had seven apiece.
The Retrievers won the rebound battle, pulling down 40 boards, including 20 offensive rebounds, led by seven from Austin and six each from Yarborough and
Heidi Williams.
Ashanti Lynch paced UMES with 15 points and six rebounds with Kalise Hill (14) and Lainey Allen (11) also reaching double figures.
The all-time series between the Retrievers and the Hawks is tied at nine wins each after the Hawks victory.
UMBC will return to action on Sunday at 5 p.m. versus Towson inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. Promotions include: Youth Day, Postgame Autographs, $1 Dogs, Mutts Gone Nuts Halftime Performance, and a Canned Food Drive.
