Brown and Howard Earn America East Weekly Honors; Volleyball Heads to MEAC Leader Coppin State on Wednesday

BOSTON - For the fifth time this season UMBC Volleyball junior libero Hannah Howard was named the America East Defensive Specialist of the Week, and classmate Jalynn Brown earned her second America East Player of the Week nod, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Howard had a team-high 14 digs (4.67 per set), four assists and two aces, and anchored a defense that held Binghamton to only .117 hitting in the sweep. Brown tallied a match high 18 kills on .277 hitting and eight digs in only three sets in the sweep. She also added a block and was a perfect 13/13 on serve receive as she played every point of the match. 

The Retrievers head to MEAC leader Coppin State on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match. 

UMBC hit .300 in Sunday's sweep of Binghamton, had eight aces and no service errors, while holding the Bearcats to just .117 hitting. 

Serin Maden had a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs, while Izzy Ostvig was second on the team with 16 assists, five digs and three blocks. 

Hannah Dobbs nearly had a double-double with nine kills and ten digs, Claudia Llamas tallied eight kills on .333 hitting with five digs and three blocks, and Laura Fuehrer picked up six kills on .500 hitting with three blocks. 

Freshman Ema Djordjevic tallied a match and career-high four aces to go with three digs, Helen Frankovich had three kills and two blocks, and Ella McAllister got the start in the back row and had four digs and an assist.

Scouting Coppin State:
  • Cherisse Atilano recorded a match-high 17 kills and 17 digs, leading Coppin State's volleyball team to its tenth-straight victory in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) win at Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Gill Gymnasium.  The Eagles are now 16-9 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the MEAC while matching a school-record for consecutive victories.
  • A freshman from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Atilano hit .342 for the match, making just four errors on 38 swings to go with a match-high four aces to total 21.0 total points.  Atilano's four aces matched a season-high while her kills and digs total were her third and second-most of the season, respectively.
  • TaKenya Stafford added 11 kills on .233 hitting to go with eight digs, followed by Ahzhi Coleman and Ivanna Luna with four kills apiece. Luna led the Eagles with three blocks while Coleman and McKenzie Parks had two blocks apiece.
  • All three of Coppin's setters saw time quarterbacking the offense with Andrea Serrano leading the way with 17 assists and seven digs. Andrea Cintron added nine assists but played a big factor with four aces while Azul Pilahg chipped in seven assists in just two sets.  The trio held Coppin hit .226 compared to just .072 for the Spartans.
  • At libero, Beatriz Cornachini saw her most playing time and was credited with six digs with three assists.  Aya Rawlins added four digs, an ace and two assists.
  • The match featured a whopping 28 ties and 16 lead changes.
