Schenning's Second Half Goal Gives Women's Soccer 1-1 Draw at New Hampshire

Durham, NH. – The UMBC women's soccer team picked up a point in the America East standings after recording a 1-1 come-from-behind draw against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

UMBC (6-7-4, 2-4-1) will still be in the hunt to qualify for next Sunday's opening round of the conference tournament when they host NJIT this Thursday evening at Retriever Soccer Park. The Dawgs are one point behind Maine for the sixth and final berth. The Retrievers must win against the Highlanders to keep their hopes alive.

The Retrievers trailed 1-0 after the hosts went ahead in the 51st minute, however, the Dawgs responded just 12 minutes later to even the contest on junior forward Payton Schenning's team-leading fourth tally of the season.

Following a New Hampshire (4-4-7, 2-1-4) turnover, redshirt freshman Zoe Brossman initiated UMBC's goal as she sent a long pass from her own 45-yard line to sophomore defender Gabby Larson, who was free on the right side near the 30-yard line of the hosts.  With a head of steam, Larson advanced the ball into the top of the right side of the box and then crossed the ball for a charging Schenning, who was wide open on the left side of the box. Schenning controlled the pass and promptly drilled a winner past Wildcats' goalie Sonja Zeepvat, who was unable to react to Schenning's laser from ten-yards out. Brossman is now tied for the team-lead with three assists along with Schenning.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead after a throw in along the right side of the Retriever's box. Elizabeth Finn collected a short pass, took a touch, and then ripped a shot past UMBC goalie Kalli Williams. Chloe DeLyser and Natalie Zibinskas were credited with assists.

UMBC came inches from taking a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the contest when Larson fired a shot along the right side of the box that led to a rebound right in front of the goal. Graduate student forward Cece Price was unable to put in the loose change as a defender came in at the last second to knock the ball away from harm.

UNH hit the crossbar with 13:15 left in the first half as Nina Ciri just missed from 30-yards out.

Williams, who made six saves, came up with her best of the day just forty seconds prior as she robbed Riley Mitza's shot from the center of the top of the box with a leaping stop that she managed to punch away.

Shots were even at 11-11 with the Wildcats putting seven on target versus four by the visitors.

UMBC will host the Highlanders at 7:00 p.m.
