The UMBC Women's Basketball team closes out the first half of America East play with a New England road trip. The Retrievers play at Bryant on Thursday night at 6 p.m., before heading to UMass Lowell for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
Last time out, UMBC dropped a 67-44 decision to visiting Vermont on Saturday afternoon. After a low-scoring second quarter, the Retrievers couldn't complete the comeback.
Jaden Walker led the offense with 13 points and four rebounds while
Jordon Lewis contributed 11 points and six rebounds.
Yasmin Ott came off the bench with eight points in 13 minutes.
Talia Davis had five rebounds in the loss.
Just two days earlier, the Dawgs shocked Mid-Major No.25 UAlbany, 71-59, on Thursday in front of a program record 3,108 fans.
UMBC led UAlbany (16-4, 6-1) the entire contest, marking the first time all season that the Great Danes did not hold a lead in a game. UAlbany, who had not given up more than 55 points in a game in America East play, entered the game at No.102 in NET and was a Quad 3 team, making both highest ranked victories the Retrievers have ever pulled off.
Davis led the offense with a career high 21 points and nine rebounds. Lewis contributed seven rebounds, while Jaliena Sanchez added 13 points and Lauren Thompson had 10 points.
Walker recorded nine points and four rebounds while Carmen Yánez had eight points and five assists in the victory.
Bryant has won three in a row, led by reigning America East Player of the Week Ali Brigham. She had career day in Binghamton as she tallied a career-high 29 points and six blocks in the Bryant University women's basketball team's 68-54 victory against the Bearcats.
Mia Mancini scored ten points and had a season-high eight assists. Nia Scott had 14 rebounds, and Mimi Rubino and Breezie Williams both hit two shots from beyond the arc.
For UMass Lowell, senior Alex Gitchenko (Ashdod, Israel) hit the game-winner, as UML (3-16, 1-6 AE) beat New Hampshire (8-13, 2-6 AE), 56-54, last Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium in America East play.
Tied at 54-54 with 20 seconds left, UMass Lowell had one chance to win it. Gitchenko played the hero for the River Hawks, fighting off defenders to put in the final basket with one second left in the contest and giving her squad its first conference win of the season.
Sophomore Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) earned a team-best of 16 points and went 7-for-11 from the floor, while also grabbing five rebounds, one assist and one steal. Gitchenko, junior Amina Kameric (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) all posted 10 points on the day. Freshman Nia Chima (Toronto, Ontario) led the River Hawks in rebounds with seven. As a team, UMass Lowell outshot its host from field goal range (49.0% to 41.1%) and behind the arc (28.6% to 9.1%).
