BALTIMORE—The UMBC women's soccer team remained unbeaten over their last three outings after a scoreless draw against the UAlbany Great Danes in the America East Conference season-opener for both squads on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Retrievers dominated from start to finish but could not put a shot past UAlbany sophomore goalkeeper Emily Dorfman, who was sensational in goal. Dorfman (seven saves) made diving stops on two penalty kicks and recorded several other great plays to keep the hosts off the board.
"Credit UAlbany for battling and earning a point, said UMBC head coach
Rick Stainton. "I thought their goalkeeper {Emily Dorfman| was spectacular during key moments. We're making progress, and that's what we're trying to establish. We'll put ourselves in the best situations if we continue to plug away. We're playing very well stylistically, controlling possession and creating opportunities. I told the team it was about the execution. In all of our games, we've left too many opportunities off the board, and that's what happened today."
UMBC (4-4-1, 0-0-1 AE) held a 22-5 advantage in shots and attempted 11 corner kicks compared to five by the visitors. The Great Danes only had a couple of scoring opportunities, and neither senior
Abbey Cowles nor junior
Sara Gavagan registered a single save in the contest.
"Our back line has been remarkably resilient this season, Stainton added. "That group of six to eight of them playing there have given up minimal opportunities and chances the entire season. Our midfield can play more freely with them playing so well and building confidence."
UMBC had more than ten quality chances but was unlucky on the offensive end.
The Retriever's best chance in the opening stanza came with 23:40 left as senior striker
Izzy Binko had an opportunity from point-blank range after graduate student forward
Natasha Munro delivered a cross from the right sideline. Dorfman was out of position, and Binko put a shot on goal, but a defender managed to deflect the ball out of bounds for a corner kick. UMBC asked for a handball on the play, but they were not awarded a penalty kick.
UMBC was given its first penalty kick with 35:15 left in the second half, as sophomore forward
Payton Schenning was taken down inside the right side of the box. Graduate student midfielder
Meghan McKye attempted to put the penalty shot into the lower left corner, but Dorfman made a diving save to her right.
Five minutes later, Binko banged a laser off the right corner of the post from 25 yards out.
Dorfman denied junior midfielder
Maddie Schepers with 7:20 remaining as she made a diving save on a ball ticketed for the net's lower left-corner.
The Great Danes (1-7-1, 0-0-1 AE) were then whistled for a handball with 1:10 left in the contest, but Munro's penalty kick was turned aside by Dorfman, who made another diving stop to her left.
UMBC will travel to Mercyhurst on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
