 Dawg Bytes
  • UMBC is seeking their first home win of the season after defeating Longwood on Sunday.
  • Junior midfielder Delainey Varela-Keen headed in a gorgeous cross from senior Alyssa Clearfield with just over five minutes remaining to give the visiting Retrievers a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against the Longwood Lancers on Sunday afternoon.
  • The game-winner occurred seconds after Clearfield took a corner kick from the right side. Clearfied's initial service was returned to her by freshman midfielder Gabby Larson just outside the box's right side. Clearfield then delivered a perfect pass to Verela-Keen, alone on the back post. Varela-Keen leaped and directed the ball into the upper right corner from five yards out.
  • UMBC (3-4) fell behind six minutes into the second half after Longwood's (1-7-2) Remi Siner put in a loose ball that UMBC reserve freshman goalie Amara Codd mishandled.
  • The Retrievers, however, battled right back and got the equalizer with 32:39 left on sophomore Payton Schenning's first goal of the season. Graduate student forward Natasha Munro made a terrific run across the midfield line as she maneuvered around a pair of defenders to initiate the play. Munro then found senior forward Izzy Binko on the left sideline, and Binko delivered a superb cross right in front of the net to the charging Schenning. The forward beat reserve goalie Sarah Curtis with a shot into the left corner as Curtis dove to her right.
  • UMBC's four assists is good for second most in the America East this season, tying their amount previously set this season against Howard.
  • The assists by Clearfield, Larson, and Binko were all their first on the season.
  • Amanda Codd (two saves) earned her first career victory as she replaced junior starter Sara Gavagan (four saves) to open the final half.
