Volleyball Welcomes Lehigh for Saturday Home Opener; Travels to Maryland on Sunday

The UMBC Volleyball team begins the home portion of the schedule when it welcomes Lehigh to The Peake on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match. The Retrievers then head down the road to Maryland for Sunday 3 p.m. contest.

There will be a t-shirt giveaway for the first 500 fans, and a pre-match banner unveiling on Saturday for the 2023 regular season and tournament championships

Scouting Lehigh:
  • Lehigh finished the Middle Tennessee Tournament with a 2-1 record, currently they are 4-2 for the season 
  • Last season Lehigh finished 13-14 and 5-11 in conference play, they struggled on the road going 1-9 in the ten away games they played.
  • Lehigh have an all time record of 3-1 against UMBC, their first matchup was held in 1982 
  • Lehigh senior setter Makena Smith recorded 20 assists in her previous contest against Southeast Missouri State, it was her fourth times this season having 20 or more assists and she has over 2500 for her career 
  • Senior libero Kyleigh Brown had 16 digs in her last contest against SEMO, last season she ranked fourth in the Patriot League for total digs with 416 and had seven matchups with more than 20
  • Junior mid blocker Madison McCartney had five blocks in her previous contest against SEMO, the game before against Arkansas State she had a career high ten blocks to go along with four digs and two aces
Scouting Maryland:
  • Last time out, Maryland volleyball posted a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-12, 25-23) against North Texas on Sep. 8.
  • The Terps (4-2) went undefeated in the Maryland Tournament, with its two other wins coming against Alabama A&M and then undefeated American.
  • The sweep was also Maryland's third of the season.  
  • Maryland manufactured several runs in its sets. It closed out its first set with a 9-1 scoring run with three kills by Sam Csire and one by Samantha Schnitta.
  • In the second set, the Terps got out to an early lead with an 11-3 run and later a 7-0.
  • The Terps' final set was tightly contested, but Maryland pulled ahead in the final moments with a service error and attack error to earn the set win.
