DAWG BYTES
  • The host UMBC men's soccer team scored three goals in a span of three minutes and fifty-five seconds late in the first and defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 4-0, on Friday evening at Retriever Soccer Park in the UMBC/Navy Invitational. Navy and FDU played to a scoreless tie in the other game.
  • Sophomore forward Ryan Calheira scored the first two goals in a stretch of just twenty-five seconds, the game-winner coming with 8:24 left in the opening half. Alek Wroblewski played a ball through the legs of a Niagara defender to Calheira just outside the top of the right side of the box. Purple Eagles' keeper Jamie Berry charged off his line, but Calheira was able to deposit the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. Just seconds later, Calheira caught up to a ball that was misplayed by a defender and knocked in a low shot just inside the near post from the right side of the box.
  • Senior forward Spencer Hanks added the final first half tally in the 41st minute.
  • Senior forward Alek Wroblewski recorded a pair of assists, while junior defender Ricky Schissler, sophomore defender Jojo Ocran, and junior goalie Emigdio Tormo Lopez were all credited with helpers.
  • Junior forward Robbie Ryerson added his first career tally late in the second half on UMBC's sixth assist of the night, this time from defender Hans Nesheim (team-leading third of season).
  • Tormo-Lopez has allowed just three goals and owns a 0.824 saves percentage.
  • Nesheim has already tied a single-season career-high with three assists and now has eight helpers as a Retriever.
