Orono, ME. --
Emily Riggs hit a solo homer and
Ella Squaires went 3-for-4 with an RBI, but the fourth-seeded UMBC Softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to fifth-seeded UMass Lowell in the America East Tournament opener on Wednesday morning.
UMass Lowell took a 2-0 lead in the second, and held the lead until the fourth when Riggs hit a leadoff homer to halve the deficit and Squaires would slap a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
The River Hawks would re-take the lead in the sixth on a 2-run homer, and UMBC would get no closer. The Retrievers had traffic on the base paths all day, but stranded nine runners.
Haley Luginbill had the other hit for UMBC, while
Mikayla Bryant added a stolen base.Â
The Retrievers will play the loser of the No.3 Bryant - No.6 Maine contest in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
