Softball Splits on Senior Day

BALTIMORE – Seniors Ashley Della Guardia and Lyndsey Evix homered on Senior Day, and Kya Matter pitched a complete game one-hitter as the UMBC Softball team split with UAlbany on Sunday afternoon.

The Great Danes took a 7-5 eight-inning thriller in game one, before UMBC won a tight, 2-0, contest in game two.

Matter allowed just the one hit, one walk and struck out four to pick up her tenth win of the season.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ella Squaires started the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Amya Lundy single. It remained 1-0 until the fifth when Evix doubled with one out, and her pinch-runner Julia Colton scored three pitches later on an Emily Riggs double.

UAlbany threatened in the top of the sixth and seventh, but Matter stranded a runner at second in each inning to pick up the win.

Della Guardia also had a hit in the contest for the Retrievers.

In the opener, UMBC trailed 5-0, but rallied late.  Della Guardia hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and that was immediately followed by a solo shot from Evix to cut the deficit to 5-3. Amaya Carroll blooped a two-RBI single in the sixth to tie the game.

After a scoreless seventh, UAlbany would plate two in the top of the eighth to go up 7-5. The Retrievers got a pair of two-out hits, but stranded both in scoring range to drop the contest.

UMBC closes the regular season at Bryant with three games beginning on Friday.
