Amya Lundy drove in three runs on the day, while
Jerzie Nutile,
Maggie Frisvold and
Kya Matter were dominant in the circle as the UMBC Softball team swept a pair of games from Merrimack on Friday on the second day of the UNCG Tournament
The Retrievers, who went 9-9 on stolen base attempts on the day, rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings in game one, before blanking the Warriors, 4-0, in game two.
The trio of pitchers combined to allow just one earned run while striking out 13 and walking just two on the day.
Game 1:
- The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Merrimack hit a leadoff homer, and a two out error allowed another run to score unearned
- UMBC would even things up in the sixth when a two-out error allowed Lundy to reach and she would eventually score on an Amaya Carroll single to make it 2-1, followed by a Nutile double to tie the game
- After each team went down in order in the seventh, the runner placed at second to start the eighth would score to put Merrimack up 3-2.
- In the bottom half, Julia Colton was placed on second to start, followed by an error and a walk to Ella Squaires to load the bases. with no outs
- Lundy would then hit a sacrifice fly to score Colton and tie the game at three.
- After Carroll reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop to load the bases back up, Macy Granzow would race home to score the winning run on a passed ball to end the game
- Frisvold worked the final 3.1 innings and got the win after striking out two and allowing just one hit and the unearned run in the top of eighth.
- Nutile got the no-decision after starting and going the first 4.2 innings, striking out two and allowing just one earned run
- Squaires and Emily Riggs also had hits for UMBC, while Granzow stole a pair of bases and Lundy stole one
Game 2:
- In the top of the first, Squaires hit a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a Carroll single.
- After Carroll stole second, both runners scored on Riggs' two-out two-RBI single
- In the second, Jolie Torrens hit a leadoff single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and then scored on Lundy's two-out RBI single to make it 3-0
- Lundy would drive in the final run of the game with a two-out RBI double in the fourth to score Granzow
- Matter only allowed multiple base runners once, in the sixth when a single and fielder's choice put two on with no outs, but she retired the next three in order
- Matter went the distance in the complete-game shutout, striking out nine, walking none and allowing just five hits, all singles.Â
- Carroll, Riggs and Torrens all had two hit games for UMBC
- Carroll also stole a pair of bases, while Mikayla Bryant, Lundy, Squaires and Torrens all stole one of their own
Thhe Retrievers will be off on Saturday due to rain in the forecast, but will return to action on Sunday at 12:30Â against UMass, followed by a 3 p.m. game against host UNCG.
