Greensboro, N.C. -- The UMBC Softball team finished the weekend at the five-game UNCG Tournament with a 3-2 record after splitting a pair of games on Sunday.
The Retrievers downed UMass, 6-3, before falling to host UNCG, 7-2, in game two.
Game 1:
- UMBC (5-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after Ella Squaires and Amya Lundy singled back-to-back to open the inning, and Squaires would eventually score on a passed ball.
- It would remain 1-0 until the third when Erin Behel worked a leadoff walk and would eventually score on an error to make it 2-0.
- Lundy would drive in Squaires with an RBI single to make it 3-0
- In the fifth, Lundy was hit by a pitch with one out and would score on an Amaya Carroll double that made it 4-0
- UMass would plate three in the top of the sixth, but Jerzie Nutile entered with two outs and got a strikeout to end the inning
- The Retrievers responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning when Macy Granzow walked to open the inning and then stole second.
- Granzow was at third with two outs when Behel once again walked, before Squaires drove in Granzow and pinch runner Julia Colton with a two-RBI single
- Nutile worked a scoreless top of the seventh for the save.
- Maggie Frisvold improved to 3-2 on the season after working 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs and striking out a pair.
Game 2:
- The high powered UNCG offense scored two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead
- It remained 2-0 until an error allowed an unearned run to score in the fifth and make it 3-0.
- Ashley Della Guardia ripped a two-out RBI double to score Colton (who pinch ran for Lyndsey Evix, who walked) and trim the lead to 3-1
- UMBC then faced some bad luck as three infield singles and a passed ball allowed four runs to score (three earned) and make it 7-1
- Carroll brought the Retrievers closer in the seventh with a two-out RBI double to score Behel (who walked), but UMBC would get no closer.
- Kya Matter was solid in the circle making her third appearance in four days, striking out four and allowing four runs
- Carroll finished 3-for-4, while Squaires and Emily Riggs each added a hit of their own
