Greensboro, N.C. -- The UMBC Softball team returned from an 11 day layoff by out-hitting Charleston Southern, but fell to the Buccaneers, 6-1, on Thursday night in the first game of the UNCG Tournament.
CSU did all of its damage in the first inning, scoring six runs, but only two earned, on four hits. The Retrievers put at least one runner on in every inning except the first and seventh.Â
Kya Matter rebounded from tough luck in the first inning to hold the Bucs scoreless the rest of the way, while striking out nine and allowing just two more hits (one on a bunt).
Erin Behel led the UMBC offense with a pair of hits, while
Jolie Torrens doubled and scored a run on an
Amya Lundy RBI groundout in the fifth. Lundy,
Jerzie Nutile and
Ella Squaires all had hits for the Retrievers.
UMBC returns to action tomorrow with a pair of contests against Merrimack at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
