Softball Heads to Binghamton for Three-Game Series

The UMBC Softball team will look to continue its hot streak as it heads to Binghamton for a three-game America East series beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.  The series will conclude with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

After a 6-0 week, the UMBC Softball team swept America East Weekly Honors. Emily Riggs was named Player of the Week, Ella Squaires earned Rookie of the Week, and Kya Matter got the nod as Pitcher of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Riggs slashed .588/1.235/1.917 with three HR, 13 RBI, two doubles, and six runs scored. She went 10-for-17 at the plate with only one strikeout., and also was perfect in the field with 8 putouts. Had the game-winning walk-off homer in the 9th on Sunday against Maine.

Squaires batted .588 (10-for-17) with two RBI, 10 runs scored and eight walks in six games batting leadoff. The freshman had a .720 OBP and went 6-for--6 on stolen base attempts.

Matter went 4-0 on the week with 31 strikeouts, five walks, 12 hits and just three earned runs in 23 innings pitched over four appearances, with three starts. The junior went 2-0 against Maine, striking out 21. In the series finale she struck out 14, walked 2, allowed 1 earned run in 9 innings of work.

Scouting Binghamton:
  • Sophomore pitcher Brianna Roberts tossed a one-hit shutout and freshman catcher Elisa Allen homered and drove in five runs, powering Binghamton (17-10) to a 2-0, 13-3 sweep over Le Moyne (8-18) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victories marked the Bearcats' first home games of the season.
  • Roberts was the star of the first game, as she allowed only three base runners through 7.0 innings. She struck out six batters and raised her record to 6-5. Only a one-out single in the top of the seventh inning by McKenzie Bergdoll prevented her from recording the no hitter.
  • Allen, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 (.500) during the doubleheader. In the second game, she drove in a career-high four runs. Sophomore outfielder Bella Farina went 4-for-6 (.667) on the day, homered, drove in three runs and scored a team-best four times.
